Writers Express:
A Handbook for Young Writers, Thinkers, and Learners
by Dave Kemper, Ruth Nathan, Patrick Sebranek

Gr. 4-7. Colorful, abundant graphics and funky cartoon art may encourage
children to pick up this nifty handbook that focuses on writing but contains much, much
more. Along with advice on how to write everything from a sentence to a thoroughly
researched classroom report to a tall tale, the authors give a few tips on using the
library (computer catalogs are mentioned as well as the old-fashioned kind) and provide
sensible guidelines for building vocabulary, reading, and math skills; preparing a speech;
taking tests; and even reading maps. Also included are a wonderfully useful grammar
review, a time line, and a section on word usage. A great refresher and reference source
for classroom, library, or home bookshelf.

Write Source
2000:
A Guide to Writing, Thinking, & Learning:
by Patrick Sebranek, Verne Meyer, Dave Kemper

It is a user-friendly reference which saves students time and gives them autonomy
which they prefer it. It is easy to generate lesson plans to get students started on using
the books. Introduce a topic, such as subject-verb agreement or sentence-combining, use
examples from Write Source 2000, help students find evidence in their own work of the the
problem, and let them see how well the book works to support editing.
The
Complete Help Your Child Learn to Read Book
by Sherry Ann Perry

also see: Reading Ed Center
The book works well with pre-schoolers and older children as well as adults. It
shows you how to help a student learn the alphabet: the names of the letters and the
sounds they represent. Then you learn how to sound out words, and right away start reading
text--little stories about everyday life, and favorite nursery rhymes. Very soon, students
are able to "help" Mom and Dad (or their mentor) read other books of interest to
them. Because this approach does not involve doing worksheets or memorizing rules and
lists of words, the students remain very motivated, and they learn rapidly. This approach
is very flexible and responsive to individual interests and rates of learning. |

Interview with author JK Rowling

Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant
daughter, J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone in stolen moments at a cafe table. Fortunately, Harry
Potter rescued her! In this interview, Rowling discusses the birth of our hero, the
Manchester hotel where Quidditch was born, and how she might have been a bit like Hermione
when she was 11.
