This week's Craft of the Week is
brought to you by Cynthia Olvera, the stay at home mom of Brianna 5 and Tyler who is 2 .
Cynthia and her husband Sam are currently living in Japan with their children. They have
been in Japan for the last 2 years and Sam is on active duty in the Air Force. Cynthia
makes extra money doing craft shows and teaching conversational English to the Japanese.
Potato Necklace is a favorite craft that she enjoys doing with Brianna and Tyler. Thanks
Cynthia for the terrific idea : ) ! What you need:
- One medium potato
- Toothpicks
- Fishing string
- Small beads (wooden or neutral colors) or small buttons
beige or browns
- Clasp from old necklace
- Acrylic paint (coral or green or something similar).
What you do:
- With my help, I cut the potatoes into long slender
slices....and then cut the slices into smaller chunks aprox. 3/4 in. size.(all different
shapes) I then let 5 year old Brianna take over. She places toothpicks in the center of
the potato chunks and sets them aside for 24 hours or until the potato chunks dry out. It
begins to wrinkle a bit, but that is okay.
- After dried out, Brianna paints each piece with coral or
aqua acrylic paints. After the potato pieces are completely dried she strings each piece
on fishing string. I assisted her in alternating 3 or 4 potato pieces with a wooden bead.
- We then use an old necklace clasp to finish the necklace. It
resembles a coral necklace or even turquoise!
Hope you have as much fun as we did....
PS: You can also use a carrot instead of potato.
Sunflower Seed Necklace
This week's Craft of the Week is sunflower
seed necklaces. I love sunflowers and grow them every summer. They are easy to grow and
require very little care- just plenty of sun ! They are a wonderful introduction to
gardening for any preschooler. After the flowers have bloomed, your youngest can still
have a wonderful remembrance of her sunflowers with this necklace. It is a terrific way to
use the seeds from sunflowers and inspire the gardener in every child.
Fashionable Glass Pins
 The
beauty of these pins is that they are made from previously
used lens from glasses and greeting cards. This craft answers the question
"What can I do with all these old cards?" You can make this as a gift and you'll
have a lot of choices when you have old pairs of glasses - the shapes can be wonderful. |
