find out more about Suerecycle.gif (2651 bytes)This weeks Craft of the Week features a fun Easter craft for all kids in kindergarten and up.

Shelly Eggs is also an good opportunity for younger children to develop their fine motor skills and become more facile with spatial relationships.

shellyegg.jpg (10946 bytes)Before starting this craft make an egg pattern or template from cardboard. The egg pattern can be large or small depending on the desired size.  With a pencil draw an egg shape onto the white cardboard.  This pattern will be used by all the kids for their Shelly Eggs.  They will use the pattern or template to draw or trace the egg shape onto their piece of cardboard and then cut it out.  You may want to make more than on egg pattern if you are doing this craft with a group of children.

Cover working surfaces with plenty of old newspapers as this craft can get messy : )>

What you need:

  • Egg shells
    - these can be saved from home and must be washed and dry.
  • Easter Egg dye
  • White craft glue
  • Cardboard
  • Newspapers

What you do:

  1. eggrecipes.jpg (3476 bytes)After making the egg pattern trace the pattern onto each child's piece of cardboard.  Cut out the egg from the cardboard.
  2. Take the clean and dry eggshells and break into small but not tiny pieces.  Following the Easter egg dye package instructions color the shell pieces.  Allow the pieces to dry thoroughly.
  3. Designs are created by the child gluing ( using the white craft glue) the different color and shaped shell pieces right onto their cardboard egg. This is a great time to encourage the kids to make patterns and to realize color relationships, like complement colors etc...
  4. After covering the entire cardboard egg with the shell pieces allow to dry thoroughly by laying on a flat surface.  Overnight drying gives the best chance for the project to be completely dried.  Shake after drying to allow unattached egg pieces to fall off.
  5. These beautiful eggs can be hung as decorations or used as the front of a beautiful Easter card.
