Just have your children cut the hearts out of beeswax with heart shaped cookie cutters and
use a simple birthday candle. You are basically creating a sandwich of 3 hearts, candle,
craft stick, 3 hearts. Her valentine candles are very cute and make a wonderful gift. It's
a lot of fun and kids can do it too!
What you need:
Beeswax Sheets
- Heart Shaped cookie
cutters
- Birthday Cake Candle
- Craft Stick (Popsicle stick)
- Spanish Moss
- Floral foam
- Clay Pot
- Stickers, paints, etc. to decorate pot
- Cinnamon candy hearts or glitter for decoration
What you do:
- Have the children cut out 6 hearts from the beeswax, all the
same color is best but not a must! Place 3 hearts together and apply some pressure
and body heat to melt together just a bit.
- Place the birthday candle in the middle with the wick coming
in between the humps of the heart. This will be your candle wick.
- Place the craft stick just below the candle bottom.
Cover the candle & stick with the other 3 hearts. You are basically creating a
sandwich of 3 hearts, candle, craft stick, 3 hearts.
- Press together to make stick. Decorate the clay pot - younger children can simply apply
valentine stickers around the pot while older ones can apply glitter & paint,
etc. Place floral foam in bottom of pot. Now push the Popsicle stick into the floral
foam to create an upright heart candle.
- Cover the floral foam with moss. You can toss red cinnamon
hearts around the moss or sprinkle with red glitter for an effect.
These candles CAN be burned under close supervision. The candle will not burn any further
than the bottom of the cake candle you inserted for a wick.
Lacey Candles
This week's Craft of the Week features homemade Lacey Candles.
These are easy to do and can be done with children age 8 and older. For a spring
look choose pastel colored paraffin or if that isn't available color your paraffin after
it completely melts. These candles look awesome because of the lacey patterns
which remain after peeling away the juice carton.
