Valentine's Day: Crafts | Recipes | Candymaking | Chocolate | Candlemaking | HotCrafts
find out more about SueThis craft is for the little pumpkins, but you might find yourself wanting to do it too! This week's craft involves sponge painting. There are many things that you can do with sponge painting. Just cut a heart shape from a sponge or make a creative shape of your own. Have a happy!

What you need:

  • Sponge shape or create your own : cut a heart shape from a sponge. You may want to draw a heart on a piece of paper, cut it out and use it as a stencil. You may want to create more than one heart shaped sponge- different sizes are a lot of fun to use too.
  • scissors
  • paper (for the card)
  • colored paints (acrylic)
  • disposable plate to hold the paint
  • old shirt for your child to wear as a smock

What you do:

  1. Fill plate with paint.
  2. Dip sponge in plate, but don't soak.
  3. Lightly place on folded paper.
  4. It might be a good idea to point out to your child how she/he can alter the color of the heart depending on the amount of pressure they apply to the sponge.
  5. You can repeat the pattern with the same color paint or use another.
  6. If changing colors wash the sponge out under running water and squeeze hard to remove any remaining water.
  7. It might be fun to overlap the hearts for a different effect.
  8. This is a great technique for wrapping paper too.
  9. You and your kids will make the most beautiful Valentines!
