dogdivamagcover.jpg (7342 bytes)Emma the Basset Hound and I can now be seen in Seventeen magazine! Our newfound stardom began when my sister, Eva, took an impromptu picture of us lounging in our backyard. Little did I know this photo would eventually become Emma’s glamorous introduction to the world. During this time, I was part of Seventeen magazine’s Teen Advisory Board and receiving new assignments. One of the assignments was sending in a funny or intriguing photo for Seventeen’s reader mail section. I thought the picture of Emma and me would be perfect for the magazine. The picture was charming because of Emma’s expressive face, and how it looked like we were having a conversation with each other.

emmajoannetalk.jpg (10408 bytes)However, there were some bumps in Emma’s road to stardom. First, I e-mailed the photo to Seventeen. Seventeen’s assistant editor loved the photo, and wanted to publish it in the magazine. But soon after I sent the photo, the new changes at Seventeen caused some confusion about incoming assignments and articles. A few months later, I asked the assistant editor if she still had the picture. Emma might have never become a "star" if the picture had gotten lost in this hustle and bustle. Luckily, the assistant editor was still interested in it, and asked me to resend it. After I did, I hoped this time the picture would finally get in the magazine.

dogdivaemma.jpg (9869 bytes)After several more e-mails, Emma’s debut was set for the June 2002 issue of Seventeen (which came out in May). When this issue came out, my parents brought a few copies home from the grocery store. I excitedly flipped to the "I.M." section of Seventeen and found the photo on the glossy pages. Emma and I had become instant celebrities! Now, Emma’s placid expression could be seen in millions of copies of this national teen magazine. I showed Emma, holding it close enough so she wouldn’t drool on it. Emma sniffed the page in appreciation.

dogdiva100.jpg (6217 bytes)Emma has blossomed into a full-blown diva thanks to her Seventeen debut. She now wears a fluffy pink crown around the house, howls for only bottled spring water in her water bowl, and prefers to be called "Princess Emma." Needless to say, Emma has let fame go to her apple-dome head. However, I don’t mind catering to her new tastes, because, to me, she’ll always be that adorable, droopy puppy that loves peanut butter, laying in the sunshine, and taking long naps.

Paper Mache Basset
& the History of Papier Mache
by Jackie Hall
papermachebasset.jpg (5641 bytes)
Jackie Hall loves Papier Mache and she caught our eye with her life sized papier mache Basset hound modeled after her Basset named Bunty. So we loved the papier mache version of her Basset so much that she mailed us a picture of the "original" Bunty, the inspiration for her artwork. She says, "I have loads of toy Bassets plus ornaments as I get given them for presents, along with Basset cards! My papier mache Basset has been to quite a few exhibitions and I often get teased when I am out walking the "real" one as to which one I am with!" Come see if you can tell the difference and learn more about the history of Papier Mache!!
