College Credits in High School
Interview with Liz
Kroboth
high school homeschooler & college student
Liz Kroboth is a perfect example of Alternative Paths to College. She was a
homeschooled student who took almost two full years of college courses while she was in
high school through the CPCC Concurrent Enrollment Program
in Charlotte, North Carolina. Not only was Liz a student at the college, she got involved
with student government in a big way. According to Tony Zeiss, the president of the
college, "Liz served as our student body president 2000-2001. She was home-schooled
and was very prepared for this leadership role. She served on our board of trustees and
had to learn to move with ease from working with peers to working with some of the
community's top leaders and policy makers."

While in Homeschool High School
Interview with CPCC
President Tony Zeiss
on the Concurrent Enrollment Program
hosted by Sue Spataro
Author Cafi Cohen said, "More than
90 percent of high school homeschoolers have taken college classes concurrent with their
high school homeschooling. Several had accumulated more than a years worth of
college credits." There are an increasing number of these programs around the country
that provide alternative paths to college.
In this Faces of Homeschooling Profile, we looked
at a "Concurrent Enrollment" of CPCC (Central Piedmont Community College) in
Charlotte, NC. We asked CPCC President Tony Zeiss to ask him a few questions about this
program for high school homeschoolers. High school homeschoolers can take college courses
while still homeschooling. The college credits are real and are transferable to four year
colleges.

Homeschool Graduates
This fun gallery celebrates some of our proud homeschoolers who
have completed high school and are on the road to college and other careers. Homeschooling
has allowed these fine students and others to focus on careers that they might not have
otherwise been able to follow. If you have a proud graduate, this is a great place to
"show off" and also to provide encouragement for people who are beginning the
journey of homeschooling. Already featured are Jennie Chauncey, who turned her love of
sewing into a successful business, Dannielle, who cares for her car and loves history,
Chuck, who is a firefighter, and so much more.
The Showgoats
Vet-by-day,
Musician-by-night
hosted by Joanne Spataro
 Dr. Walker Meadows, a
talented veterinarian, has a fun and unique hobby. When its time to call it a day,
Dr. Meadows enjoys playing music in his band The Showgoats. It helps him unwind after his
busy days taking care of animals. The Showgoats specialize in country tunes,
complete with catchy lyrics and excellent music! Dr. Meadows was inspired to be a
veterinarian when he was in high school. He was a stable hand for a carriage company. He
enjoyed the regular visits a veterinarian made to check up on the horses. And so he became
one.

Homeschooler sews her
way to a successful business
hosted by Joe Spataro

 Homeschooler Jennie Chancey was able
to take advantage of the flexibility offered by homeschooling to learn how to sew. She has
turned this love into a successful
business called Sense & Sensibility. I had the opportunity to interview
Jennie and ask her a few questions about homeschooling, her vintage dressmaking business
and how she is helping other homeschoolers to share in her love of vintage dressmaking.

Minnesota
Homeschooler wins national spelling bee

Thirteen
year-old homeschooler Sean Conley of Anoka, Minnesota returned to the 74th National
Spelling Bee on May 31, 2001 to become the winner after being runner up last year. He
correctly spelled the word succedaneum (definition - one who or that which
supplies the place of another). Speaking of replacing "another", Sean has
received most of his education through home schooling by his parents. Recently many of the
winners of this contest, such as Rebecca Sealfon and George Thampy, have
"replaced" their traditionally schooled counterparts by winning this contest.

Igniting a Career
by Linda Dobson

My son, Chuck, was 14 years-old when our neighbor and friend started
an Explorer Scout Post with the local volunteer fire department where he was a member.
What I didn't realize right away was how seeds that would blossom into a career were being
planted at the same time. I sometimes wonder what he would be doing today if homeschooling
hadn't allowed him the time to pursue his interest so thoroughly. Then I hear a fire
call. I know he is serving his community, an important lesson from his homeschooling days,
and making a living doing what he loves.
