	Marsha Ransom, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Homeschooling and is the mom of 4 homeschooled kids (2 graduated and 2 to go!). Her new book (interview on the Zone) is a step-by-step manual written for the new and inexperienced homeschooler. The explanations, resources, and recommendations apply to families homeschooling for a wide variety of reasons and to families who "afterschool" their children. If you find yourself teaching subjects you know little about, undecided about what curriculum to choose, or concerned that your children may miss out on band, drama, or sports, this guide provides practical advice from an author who has homeschooled four children. About her daughter, Jacinta, she says: Here is my daughter Jacinta Ransom exploring life through her interest in oceans. One picture shows her stenciling fish and sea life on the walls of her bedroom. We had been helping her find resources for studying the ocean for about a year and a half when she and I decided to redecorate her room. Her Dad provided us with the background for the wall painting by painting the walls a color aptly called "aqua" and sponging them with white to create a watery affect. Then Jacinta and I stenciled and stamped and painted free-hand for 5 days to create her room, which gives you the feeling that you are inside an aquarium! Another picture is an "after" picture of her room, showing the bedspread we found that looks like a shell-covered sandy beach. Also included are a picture of Jacinta with a collection of shells and such at the Van Andel Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which we visited with our family and an uncle and aunt. Another is of some figurines she painted (seals and dolphins) at her ceramics class. We love interest-based immersion learning! Craft-of-the-Week & Kathy Ross present... Homemade Shell Candles This is a terrific project for all those shells you have been collecting this summer. Try to use large and deep shells to make the candles- they will work best to hold the paraffin most effectively.These candles are excellent to accessorize your house and make fun gifts.
