Immigration Policy: Past & Present
Many people and some Presidential candidates today speak against the immigration of people from Mexico and also from the Asian rim as being undesirable. Yet, the history of America is built upon multiple waves of immigrants, not only making a life for themselves, but contributing significantly to the growth of America. Could you compare and contrast the current wave of immigration to the past and perhaps comment on your views of what our policy should be.

Immigration policy is all screwed up since the `1965 Act whose every prediction has been belied.
The numbers are excessive. Illegal immigration is out of control. I don't see why it makes sense of America to discriminate against skilled Europeans, for instance, who may want to come. . Nor do I see any sense in admitting people who are anti-American: the World Trade Center was the result of lax immigration policies. America cannot accept the entire world: it must, through free trade and other policies, encourage the growth of prosperity worldwide. I was in favor of NAFTA because it would help more Mexicans for instance to have a good life in Mexico. What is essential is to cut through the multicultural nonsense in education and make sure that every immigrant understands American history. The schools and universities have a duty, which they are not accomplishing very well, to educate newcomers to the importance of the rule of law in our development, for instance, and all the struggles of the Americans - without which there would not be a wonderful democracy here to receive them.

The American Century
by Harold Evans, Gail Buckland, Kevin Baker

Although most of this sprawling book is set in the 20th century, it begins on April 29, 1889, when Benjamin Harrison commemorated the first centennial of American government. This 11-year jump-start allows Harold Evans to write about the last major push to settle the Western territories, the gradual dwindling of Native American societies, the rise to prominence of William Jennings Bryan, and other quintessentially American moments of the 19th century.
