halloween-t.gif (3891 bytes)jackolantern.gif (3720 bytes)This week's Dessert of the Week features Popcorn Balls.  This is an all time favorite sweet.  Popcorn balls are terrific for any holiday like Halloween or as a kid treat for a job well done.

These are very easy to prepare because you'll be using your microwave.  Have the kids join in the fun, they'll like shaping the popcorn into balls .

What you Need:

  • 2 2/3 cups of sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of hot water
  • 2/3 cup dark corn syrup
  • 2 teaspoons of vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla
  • 12 cups of popped popcorn
  • Wax paper
  • Plastic wrap
  • Butter for hands

What you do:

  1. halloweendogs.jpg (9329 bytes)Combine sugar, hot water, corn syrup, and vinegar in a 3 quart casserole dish.  Microwave at high for 35 to 40 minutes or until hard crack stage (300-310 degrees) when syrup separates into hard, brittle threads when small amount is dropped into cold water, stirring 3 or 4 times.
  2. Stir in vanilla.  Pour syrup over popcorn, stirring to coat.  Quickly shape into balls, using buttered hands.   Place on wax paper; cool completely.  Wrap each in plastic wrap.

Halloween bag
footballkid.gif (7892 bytes)Halloween bag will make sure that all that candy comes home in one piece. I got this idea after years of trying to catch candy coming from the bottom of ripped bags while trick or treating with the kids. The bags can be reused every year and are sturdy enough for the most aggressive trick or treater. There are many ways of decorating the bags from creative stitching to fabric painting. This craft is perfect for all kids whether it is done at home or in school.

Chocolate Spiders
candymaking.jpg (6000 bytes)chocolate.jpg (6027 bytes)This week's Dessert of the Week comes from noted cookbook author and chef Gregg Gillespie. His Chocolate Spiders, featured in his popular book 1001 Chocolate Treats, are perfect for any Halloween party or celebration! They are simple to make and delicious to eat! This book is an encyclopedia of chocolate delights featuring all things chocolate - from candies to decadent chocolate cakes. Make sure to make a double batch because your little goblins will be sure to gobble them up!
