All children enjoy having ownership in their work, and they
especially like to complete projects which focus on themselves. Bookmaking can be a fun
and easy way to help children at various ages and ability levels to communicate through
writing. Here is one suggestion for cloth bookmaking with small children:
What you do:
Cut material squares approximately the size of a regular sheet of
typing paper (8 1/2 X 11) or larger.
A good rule of thumb to follow is, the younger the child, the bigger the writing surface
area should be.
- Have the child use nontoxic puff paints, glitter paints, or
other fabric paints to create pictures about him/her self. He/she can dictate to you what
they want the script to say.
- Parents then use a permanent magic marker to write the
child's words on each "page" of the book to correspond with the pictures.
- When dry, you can use a sewing machine and zigzag stitch
around the edge of each page to prevent fraying.
- The cloth book can be "bound" by either sewing a
seam down the left-hand side, or by using a round book ring.
- Cloth books hold up well, and make a great keepsake for your
little ones to pass on to their children someday!

Preschool project
for Mother's Day
From LUVarekids
I am
a preschool teacher of 3-4 year olds. For Mother's
Day I had my class make the clothbook. I used felt instead of another kind of
material for one reason it came already precut. I had the children paint 4 pages and I did
the cover page. I gave the children a subject to draw a picture on and then I wrote what
they drew about. On one page I asked them to draw something that they do with their moms,
on another something their Mom does for them and the next was a picture of themselves and
their Mom and on the last page "I love my Mom this much". On the cover page I
titled their books Mommy and Me and put the date on it and a drew a flower. The mothers
just loved them. I had a few that said they were crying when they looked at the books.
Thanks for the wonderful idea
Texture Books
These books are super because your child can help you create them
and will help tactile development. Scrap material can be used to make these books. use
bright colors that your child enjoys. It is important to create a book that is both strong
and attractive.
Making Your Own Stickers
This is a super idea to create your
personalized messages as decorations or as a way to tell your kids "Well Done"!
These stickers are a fabulous, not to mention inexpensive way, to brighten your children's
day. They are also great as an arts and crafts project. They can be made to adorn
homemade greeting cards and other novelties ( including notebooks).
