In preparation for Valentine's Day, this week's Craft of the
Week is Heart Magnets. These are terrific for the fridge and a welcomed gift for any
age. They can also be made into fashionable pins . Attach pin backings to the
heart instead of magnets. The craft "dough" will keep unrefrigerated for
up to 2 weeks when stored with a small piece of damp sponge in a plastic bag or sealed
container. This fun craft can be done with children of any age starting from 4 years
old and up.What
you need:
- 1 cup of salt
- 1/3 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of cornstarch
- 1/4 cup of cold water
- Food coloring and/or tempera paints
- Heart cookie cutter
- Store bought magnets
and/or pin backings
- Hot glue gun
What you do:
- Make the clay: Heat salt and 1/3 cup of water over medium
high heat for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and add
cornstarch and 1/4 cup of cold water. The mixture should look like thick mashed
potatoes, stir until it thickens, then let cool for a few minutes before kneading.
If the dough seems too sticky at first work in extra cornstarch as you knead. Add
food coloring if you desire.
Using a rolling pin or hands flatten the dough to 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch
thickness depending on your preference. Using the cookie
cutter cut out hearts. Place them on a piece of plastic wrap or waxed
paper and let dry. They should stand and dry for 1-4 days. Put them in an area
of the house where there is little traffic.
- After the hearts are dried completely, they are ready to be
painted. Using the paints decorate the hearts. Be creative. After the
paint has dried you can varnish or shellac them for a shiny finish. Using the hot
glue gun attach the magnet or pin backing.

I have also seen this pin or magnet done another way. Cut out heart shapes out of
brightly colored tissue paper. Then glue them overlapping one another onto the pin. Then
spray with clear acrylic spray. Have fun!

Valentine Hug Box & Cookies
Yes, it is a craft, yes it is a recipe, but the best part of it is
the personal touch. The giving of yourself. This Valentine Package should be made for
anyone you care about- this could be grandparents, a sick friend or anyone who could use a
hug. Look around your neighborhood. Look into your own family. If a class is going to
create this craft think about a small group that you would like to donate these treasures
to. All will be brightened by your efforts; your artistry; your art. |
