coverThis week's Craft of the Week is brought to us from the popular activity/craft book 365 Days of Creative Play by Sheila Ellison and Judith Gray.   The publishers of this book, Sourcebooks sent us here at Families First a copy of this wonderful book and encouraged us to feature an excerpt.

365 Days of Creative Play is chock- full of excellent crafts and play ideas for children starting from age 2 years and up.  The list of crafts in this book is endless- from napkin holders to various crafts taken directly from nature.  If you are having a children's birthday party or the kids are feeling the summer doldrums, you must get this book !!

This week's Craft of the Week is brought to us by the authors of 365 Days of Creative Play, Sheila Ellison and Judith Gray.  Their craft book is a huge collection of easy to do and fun activities for the entire family- it's like having  a complete craft camp on your bookshelf! This week we a featuring two of their terrific crafts; Rock Crystals and Homemade Playdough.

What you need:

  • Porous stones or charcoal briquettes
  • Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Warm water
  • Small enamel or glass bowl

What you do:

  1. Add 3 tablespoons of salt to a half bowl of warm water and stir until it dissolves.  Keep adding salt until no more will dissolve.
  2. Add a tablespoon of vinegar.   Fill up the bowl with porous stones or briquettes.  Leave on top of refrigerator for a couple of days.   Take it down and notice that crystals have begun to form.   As the water continues to evaporate, the bowl will be filled with rock crystals.
