Here are 2 craft ideas that will let you show off your shells in a
practical and fun way! You can use various types of shells or choose the same type of
shell for your creations.
Shell Flowerpot
What you need:
- Terra cotta flower pots- any desired size
- Craft glue
- Shells
What you do:
Use the
craft glue to attach shells. Start with a ring of shells at the top of the pot (shells
should begin higher than the rim of the pot). Work downward, placing each successive row
about halfway down the shells
on the last ring.
- If you want your shells to be shiny you can use a water base
acrylic glaze. The shells should be glazed before you in the project. Allow to completely
to dry before gluing the shells to the the flower pot.
Shell Mirror
Frame
What you need:
- Oval mirror frame, painted white
- Craft glue
- Shells (scallop shells are particularly good for this
project)
What you do:
- Choose scallop shells in a variety of colors, all about 1
inch wide.
- Paint frame white including front, back, and inside edges.
Lay shells
on frame to determine color arrangement.
- Dab glue to inside tip and base of each shell, and press
onto frame.
- Allow to dry flat on a table. Hang when completely dried.

Shell
Picture Frames & Shell CD/Frig Magnet
From: Linda
There are so many things you can do with sea
shells. You can purchase acrylic clear picture frames and glue the shells around the
borders. Use a good craft glue like Alene's Tacky Glue. It will dry clear and is strong
enough to hold the weight of the shells. If possible dry flat.
I also did this craft with pre-school and kindergarten kids. We took
CDs coated them in glue and dipped them in colored sand. Then we dipped the sea shells in
the tacky glue and pressed them onto the sand coated CDs. Gave them 48 hours to dry, put
on some stick on magnets on the back and then hung them on the referigerator.
Hope these ideas help.
Sunflower Seed Necklace
This week's Craft of the Week is sunflower
seed necklaces. I love sunflowers and grow them every summer. They are easy to grow and
require very little care- just plenty of sun ! They are a wonderful introduction to
gardening for any preschooler. After the flowers have bloomed, your youngest can still
have a wonderful remembrance of her sunflowers with this necklace. It is a terrific way to
use the seeds from sunflowers and inspire the gardener in every child.
Homemade Shell Candles
 This is a
terrific project for all those shells you have been collecting this summer. Try to use
large and deep shells to make the candles- they will work best to hold the paraffin most
effectively. These candles are excellent to accessorize your house and make fun gifts- it's
never too early to start for Christmas!
