These books
are super because your child can help you create them and will help tactile development.
Scrap material can be used to make these books. use bright colors that your child enjoys.
It is important to create a book that is both strong and attractive. What you need:
- Material - for
the outside of the book
- Scrapes of material with varying textures (velvet, burlap,
seersucker, cork, sandpaper etc...)
- Paper
- Laces or colored pieces of wool or string
- Hole punch
- Fabric markers
- Hot glue gun, craft glue
What you do:
- Make a paper pattern the size of an opened book. Pin the
pattern onto the material and cut around it- this way you are sure that all the pages are
exactly the same size. Cut as many pieces as you want- it will depend on how many pages
you want in the book. Lay the material pages on top of each other. Join them together by
sewing along the center fold.
- For attaching pictures- drawings, photos- tie them into the
book with the laces or colored wool or string. If they are covered with self-adhesive
plastic first, they will last longer. untie a hole in each picture to thread the fastening
through. Words can be written with fabric markers.
- Textures- Use different textures to make pictures for your
book. You may find it useful to feel the textures with your fingers. If you close your
eyes you will discover how important the sense of touch is to all of us.
- Make the book the same way as the first. Instead of
attaching drawings and pictures glue various material onto the fabric pages with either
craft glue or use a hot glue gun. Create pictures with the materials for extra sensory
stimulation. You can also write with a fabric marker the name of the textured material.
- Make sure that your books are safe for young children to
use- there must be no sharp pieces and everything must be glued securely.

My Special Cloth Book
All children enjoy having ownership in their work, and they
especially like to complete projects which focus on themselves. Bookmaking can be a fun
and easy way to help children at various ages and ability levels to communicate through
writing.
Melted Crayon Jars
These jars are both pretty and
useful containers for such things as flowers, pencils, and odds and ends. They are fun and
easy to make and each one is different. Remember to keep your finished jars out of direct
