find out more about SueI have discovered that my own children love to create and use their own markers. In fact, I believe that it inspires children to read. It personalizes the book. There is nothing better than a child reading on her own; choosing her own books and passionately exploring them.

valentinesdaylogo.jpg (5142 bytes)This bookmark can be decorated in a Valentine theme.
Use red sequins, markers, and ribbon for a Valentine look. You can use glue sticks with the little ones and white liquid glue for the older kids. The tassel is a nice addition and again you can use red, pink, or white wool for that Valentine look.

Unit Study Idea
If a class if making this craft, you can make a bookmark based on a unit study that you are discovering or a book that the whole class is reading together. For example, if the class is reading a book about "Miss Spider" the book marks can include insects and Miss Spider characters as their theme.

What you need:

  • bookmaking.gif (5011 bytes)Cardboard - this should be textured or colored for a nice background
  • Sequins
  • Magic markers or crayons
  • Glue
  • Contact - laminated plastic
  • Wool
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors

What you do:

  1. Cut out the cardboard so that the bookmark will be 2 ½ inches wide and 8 inches long.
  2. Decorate it with sequins, markers, crayons- let those creative juices run wild.
  3. Contact (laminate) the cardboard after the glue is completely dried.
  4. Put a hole with the hole punch up the top and in the middle of the cardboard.
  5. Tie wool through the hole to form a tassle.
  6. Get a good book and READ !!!!
