These activities are designed to promote awareness of others and the world around them. Also to give children confidence in who they are - knowing that differences are okay and attitudes and consciences vary in things we decide to do in our lives.
Differences due to upbringing also need to be discussed and differences due to special needs or handicaps.
Children need awareness and understanding of all groups of people. They also need to see the good in themself.

A colorful world (poem)
Grades 3-6

All over the world
We see a different face
And beauty of all colors
Surrounds every place

The customs of some people differ from others
But all of us have family and Fathers and Mothers
Each race has beauty without compare
And all of us can love and share

We make the world brighter place
With color and character on each ones face
Striving to be kind to people we see
Makes the best future for you and me

Each child can answer the question....
on paper of "Why he or she is special?" Or "Things to like about me." Each child can write about him or herself and state some beliefs they have or customs , facts about their family, animals, home, games they play, places they like to go.. Things like that.

Class can make Hero sandwiches.

  • Sandwiches can be made from different colors sizes and shapes of bread. For instance Using Buns, loaf bread of wheat and white or rye.
  • Children design their sandwich. Faces may be made on sandwiches using cut green peppers, onions, tomatoes, pretzel sticks and olives. Everyone is a Hero.!!
  • Cut the cheese into ribbon like strips that hang out of the sandwich.
  • Discuss Heros of the world of all races.
  • Have Neopolitin Ice Cream to stress that good comes in all flavors and colors..

Each week focus on different people...

  • Each week the teacher can focus on a different type of people or a specific country for teaching about. Children can do reports on it.
  • Mobiles of children of the world can be made. Teacher can have cutouts for the children to color of different races of people from a variety of places.
  • Children can learn a certain cultures dance.
  • Children can make board games of going to different areas. Using facts they know about the countries to make up there game.
  • Children can List differences and similarities in themself and someone else, or in a different type of people.
  • Bookmarks can be made that say:" Friendship can be found...All around!"
  • Bullitin Board can say:
    • "Qualities we all can share..
      Are throughout the world--Everywhere"

ANOTHER POEM
It's only differences...

I don't like him.- Why said she?
Because he doesn't look at all like me
He talks funny, walks funny and I think he's odd
He never laughs at my jokes like my friend Todd

So what your saying said the lass
Is differences arrise in class
You're scared of him or don't understand
You think you're the typical figure of man

But what we need to know for now
Is how to get along somehow
In spite of differences and ways we know
We need to widen out with love to show

Learn all that we can about each other
And find a liking for one another
If not a thing to like we can find
We need to look again, rewind

Try to be kind even so
And get along, then as we grow
We'll learn more of what we should know
And happy times for us will glow

Lori Henson

The point of this poem is....
All should be accepted. If someone isn't liked, maybe we haven't looked deep enough to find something we can like about them. But.. even so... if we do not like someone it doesn't mean we cannot work together in peace and be kind and get our education and leave others alone so they can get their education. Then.. the world is a better place with people working together.
We don't have to have everything in common to have fun.
