"Fishing With Grandfather"
by Linda Thomas

I am new to the list. Here is a poem my 7 yr old wrote. He won a few poetry contests for this poem this year.

If I Were a Pencil
by Sam Bruun

If I were a pencil
I'd write a whole dictionary
I'd shoot my eraser like a slingshot
My lead would talk
My words would dance
I could make marks on the ceiling
And leave messages in people's shoes

Colorful Day
by Jefferay Lee Hoetger - age 14

bhlogo.jpg (3943 bytes)The world is full of many colors,
But it seems people only know of black and white.
Others discriminate because of ones skin tone,
And that gets me really hype!
Then this really gets to you,
And it really makes you wonder-
"Would MY friends treat me better
or worse if I was a different color?"

Then a colorful day will come,
No matter what race, sex, or color-
Everybody will all walk as one!

How a published poem can change a life
From: Linda
Back in June I emailed the poem that my son wrote. And I also gave a copy to his Great-Aunt in Nevada and she had entered it into a fall feastival in Phrump, Nevada. whare she lives. Jefferay won First Place in the age group of Teens (13-17) and he also won the Reserve Lot Champion.... Thanks for allowing his poem on your site, he spends time on the computer and he knows that if he wants to see his poem on the internet there are a few sites that he can see his named. I also had his poem put into a shadow box with one of his small chapbook, ribbons, a copy of the poem and a picture of Jefferay and it is hanging on the wall where when you come in the door you see the shadowbox. Thank you again for what you have done!

The Complete Help Your Child Learn to Read Book
by Sherry Ann Perry
buynow.gif (1537 bytes)
also see: Reading Ed Center
The book works well with pre-schoolers and older children as well as adults. It shows you how to help a student learn the alphabet: the names of the letters and the sounds they represent. Then you learn how to sound out words, and right away start reading text--little stories about everyday life, and favorite nursery rhymes. Very soon, students are able to "help" Mom and Dad (or their mentor) read other books of interest to them. Because this approach does not involve doing worksheets or memorizing rules and lists of words, the students remain very motivated, and they learn rapidly. This approach is very flexible and responsive to individual interests and rates of learning.

Have you ever needed an extra exercise to help reinforce that grammar concept? How about something interesting to introduce a new unit? This book really does have it all. The writing exercises really stretch creativity.
